Ginsberg Tournament 2018 Recap

The Ginsberg tournament came to an end yesterday afternoon with Victoria going down to NSW in a shootout loss in the Grand Final going down 6-5. Despite the tough loss, our Victorian team fought all the way to the end and did an amazing job. A huge congratulations to the whole team, they did Victoria proud, never gave up and showed us the the future is bright for hockey here in Victoria!

The team staff reported the kids played fair, clean hockey and plays well beyond their years. Their commitment to the team and never give up attitude allowed every single player to exceed expectations to provide some of the best hockey the coaches have seen for the age group.

Tommy Forest was awarded the Team MVP award as well as the Best Goalie award of the tournament, voted on by all teams. The whole team also won the Fair Play award for the least penalty minutes of all teams during the tournament.

The tournament doesn’t just happen without the help of the incredible volunteers behind the scenes. Ruth Brooks stepped in to the role of Tournament Director with some great support by Val Webster. Ruth provided the tournament with great direction with many commentating on the great organisation of the event – on behalf of IHV and everyone involved in the tournament, thank you Ruth for your massive contribution this week. Your time and effort is appreciated by everyone involved.

Georgia Carson and her coaching and team stuff worked hard and against some recent coaching changes to provide a tournament result that we’re all proud of and a culture within the team of positivity and encouragement, pushing the players to be the best they can be. Good coaches build not just good players, but good people and their Fair Play award for the team and the result really demonstrate Georgia and her team hit the mark. This extends to all the coaching team that does work behind the scenes every weekend with this age group that build the steps towards this result.

Special mentions to our veteran players Matt Nikitin, AJ Harris, Ollie Ashby and Niamh Gallacher for outstanding performances in the Grand Final and also to our rookies putting a huge stamp on the tournament – Jett Porter, Jed Lake and Alexei Rayzman who proved to be key future stars of Ice Hockey Victoria.

Plenty of work happens over the weekend. We’d like to thank Adam Harrington for the music and Jason Bajada for announcing the whole tournament. Andrew May, Mario Pansino and Jayme Law who have no players in the team but helped in penalty box on more than one occasion and a special thanks also to Tamara Lake, Jenny Parolin and Kelly Harper for being there everyday and helping no matter what.

We’d also like to extend even further thanks to any parent who brings their child to play and support the sport – every little piece is appreciated and valued. Results like this aren’t possible without your commitment.

Congratulations to the team and thank you everyone (including O’Brien Group Arena) for a great tournament weekend!
