Month: March 2018

Melbourne Dragons – 2018 Australian Women’s Tier 2 Show Case Series

The Melbourne Dragons fly off to Canberra this weekend in what will be their third year
participating in the Australian Women’s Tier 2 Show Case Series, they begin their season at the
Phillip Ice Skating Centre competing against the Adelaide Valkyries, Brisbane Stars, Canberra
Pirates and Sydney Bombers.
The team roster was announced earlier this month, welcoming some new and familiar faces
back to the Dragons, along with the exciting announcement of a Dragons development
squad. This year we bid farewell to one of the Dragons Maki Katsuyama as she heads back
home to Japan. Two Dragons from the 2017 squad, Christine Dutton and Ketta Scheuerlein
were selected to play with the Melbourne Ice Women’s squad, and favourite matte helmet
coloured fierce goalie Paula Keen was selected to play for the Sydney Sirens.
The Melbourne Dragons finished in third place in the 2017 Australian Women’s Tier 2 Show
Case Series defeating the Canberra Pirates at the O’Brien Group Arena in Melbourne in a
shootout and claiming the Bronze. This year the team are working hard and have their heart
set on the gold.
The Dragons are ready and eager to battle the other states to represent their home state,
Melbourne. Following the two tryout sessions which were held at each of the Melbourne
rinks and the observation at training sessions, this looks to be the Dragons strongest team
to date. “Remember you are playing for your state, the logo on your chest, give it 110%” –
Coach Lawrie Pigot.
Unfortunately, Lawrie will not be able to join the team in Canberra due to a personal
commitment, but has been a key element in prepping the team and will certainly be missed
over the weekend. Emma Poynton has stepped in and will lead the team into battle. Coach
Poynton brings a wealth of knowledge from her years of playing Ice Hockey and her
background in sports development, and no doubt the team will be in good hands. Emma
and the team are being supported by team managers, Shelley Alexander and Ruth Brooks
who have been working day through night and doing a tremendous amount of work behind
the scenes to get the team ready to go!
Pride Tape and Purple Dragons Pucks are also being sold by the team to assist with the costs
in participating in the tournament. Thank you to all the supporters, family, and friends for
your overwhelming support to date.
